About Mucuna Pruriens
The mucuna pruriens plant is a tropical plant that is native to certain parts of Africa and Asia. The plant is in the same family as numerous climbing plants. The term mucuna is of Brazilian descent. On the other hand, the word pruriens is of Latin descent. The latter refers to the itching sensation that arises after one comes into contact with the hairs of the mucuna plant. Some of the popular terminologies used to refer to the plant include velvet bean, cowitch, itchy bean, and monkey tamarind, among others. The mucuna plant is partly woody and grows best in tropical and sub-tropical climates. For optimal bean quality, the plant prefers well-drained loose soil with ample humus and moisture. When the mucuna pruriens is young, it is fully covered with itchy hairs as an environmental adaptation. However, once the plant matures, a huge proportion of the hairs clear off. Mucuna pruriens is obtained after the mucuna beans are dried and ground.
The mucuna pruriens plant has a rich history of use that spans hundreds of centuries. The earliest written text points this back to about 1500BC. Whenever locals were stung by scorpions, wasps, and bees, they would apply the crushed extract on the bruised or swollen part. They believed that the extract was a remedy as it suppressed the pain and inflammation from the stings. In different parts of the world, e.g. in West Africa, the powder obtained from the mucuna pruriens beans used by individuals who engage in activities that require a lot of energy. Examples include those who engage in gold mining, plowing land, and quarry mining. These individuals believe that the powder provides rapid energy and vigor. Some of the countries which were and still use the mucuna plant as a food crop include Mozambique, Zambia, Ghana, and Nigeria. The beans quickly became part of their numerous delicacies, especially during the relatively dry seasons. Mucuna pruriens is also popular in South America, where the locals used it as a substitute for coffee. They likened it by saying that it had a stimulating effect and would give them renewed energy alongside giving them strength.
Indian and Chinese civilizations included mucuna pruriens in their traditional healing concoctions. They would then subscribe them to those suffering from various forms of ailments. The biggest beneficiaries of these herbal formulations were the elderly, who were at a point where the body was highly susceptible to various conditions. Since the plant is relatively tough as it grows, it was also used to suppress and kill weeds in the farmland. It was also used in mulching where it would serve as a cover crop. It would resultantly increase soil fertility and quality. This practice was especially popular amongst small scale farmers. It was also used as a formidable food source for livestock, especially ruminants e.g. pigs. This option was highly explored in the 19th century. The pods holding the mucuna beans quickly grew to be a favourite food for the pigs, cattle, and also poultry. Different societies still apply the practice to date.
