Triphala powder, which gives rise to triphala capsules, has been in use in Ayurveda for over 2,000 years. The powder is also referred to as ‘triphala churna’. The term triphala is a combination of two terms, ‘tri’ and ‘phala’. Tri means three while phala means fruit. Triphala is made from dried powder obtained from three fruits of different constitution and qualities: Amla (Phyllanthus emblica), Bibhitaki (Terminalia belLerica) and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula). All the three fruits are native to the Indian subcontinent. The three dried fruits are mixed up in equal proportions to come up with the triphala powder. The three fruits making up the polyherabal combination work synergistically and complement each other in dispensing the numerous health benefits.
Triphala is held with high regard and importance in Ayurvedia. The Indians still revere the powder to date. There is a popular Indian saying that states “a child needs not worry even he does not have a mother a triphala will take care of his requirements.” It essentially means that triphala is in a position to take care of the body’s external and internal organs, the same way a mother does to their child. Charak, who was a great royal physician in King Aryan Kaniska’s reign, stated that the powder had the effect of increasing one’s life span. The physician was tasked with coming up with recipes that ensured the king lived for more than 100 years. The best combination he made for the king comprised of triphala, honey and ghee. A combination of the superior qualities of the three products enabled the king avoid opportunistic diseases that come with old age, as stated in Charaka Samhita and Shushrute Samhita.
Taste is a key factor while taking triphala. One has to let their taste buds feel the five different tastes possessed by the powder: astringent, bitter, pungent, sweet and sour. Of the six tastes recognised by Ayurveda, the only one that does not apply is the salty taste. The different tastes trigger the body by sending signals and thus the body stays in a state of anticipation of what is to come. The bitter and astringent tastes are the most profound. Amla manages pitta, while bibhitaki and haritaki are associated with managing kapha and vata respectively. The three are biological energies found within and which control the human body and mind.
The major bioactive compounds that make up Triphala capsules include tannins, flavonoids, asponins, anthraquinones and acids e.g. gallic, ellagic and chebulinic acid. The flavonoids include luteolin and quercetin. The compounds are attributed to most of the antioxidant properties displayed by triphala. Triphala capsules also contain relative proportions of amino acids, fatty acids, and carbohydrates.
Triphala capsules have quite a number of applications. They are used to treat stomach upsets and improve stomach health. Also, they play a crucial role in oral health as they help reduce the severity of dental cavities and other dental conditions. The capsules also play a key role in weight loss and management as they control blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity. Also, they play a key role in reducing constipation and enabling smooth digestion in the long run. They are able to increase the time digested food lasts in the intestines thus improving food absorption. Overall, triphala plays a crucial role in ensuring a healthy and sound reproductive, cardiovascular, digestive, reproductive and nervous system.
