Known as the Beauty Mineral
MSM, read methylsulfonylmethane in full, is a sulfur compound. This is unlike its counterpart, dimethylsulfoxide-DSMO. which has a strong pungent smell that is similar to that which emanates from hot sulfur springs. MSM is preferred due to its high bioavailability while providing sulfur to the human body. Most people revere sulfur and in the process refer to it as the ‘fountain of youth’. This is because of the belief that it has properties that contribute to longer life, for both animals and plants.
MSM has a profound history of use which is traced back to the World War II era. Scientists came to learn about it as they were exploring the content of cow milk. Before the introduction of MSM, most people depended on certain foods to provide them with organic sulfur. Some of these foods include garlic, horseradish, onions, cabbages, leeks, mustard, kales, etc. However, MSM provides sulfur that is ready to take and in its simplest form. In the 1950s, Dr. Stanley Jacob of the University of Oregon Medical School spectacularly came across a sulfur compound referred to as DMSO. This happened by chance as he was in the process of finding an unexplored way in which one could ice up organic tissue while still making sure that it maintained all its properties. While at it, he discovered the versatility of DMSO, and that it had other unique properties alongside being a cryoprotective medium. The compound exhibited properties of being able to penetrate the skin. He would therefore go on to recommend it to patients who had underlying bone and tissue defects. They were advised to apply it over the region where they felt the pain. At one point in time, the compound was lauded as ‘the most exciting thing in medicine’, due to its unique set of attributes.
The progress of exploring MSM was only affected after there was a sad turnout of events with one of the emerging drugs at the time, Thalidomide. The latter had profound sedative effects and was used widely to serve as a remedy for various defects. However, it would go on to have unfavourable effects on foetuses and bodies of expectant women. Most of the research for similar drugs, MSM included, was cut short. This also meant that they had been momentarily banned from human consumption. It took a couple of years to get MSM back on the scene. This time around, it was only explored for veterinary uses. This would be the case for a couple of years until researchers and scientists could prove that it was fit for human consumption and had minimal to almost zero side effects on the human body. With increased research, scientists had broken DMSO further with the dominant metabolite being dimethyl sulfone, otherwise abbreviated as DMSO2. The latter is what is referred to presently as methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). The endless limits of MSM are still being pursued to date; more people are making it part of their lifestyle, including adding it to their food and drinks.
