About Chlorella

Chlorella is a rapidly growing unicellular algae that can either be found as clusters or single units in water bodies. Chlorella is the name given to the genus of roughly 15 species of green algae which are classified under the division Chlorophyta and family Chlorellaceae. The word chlorella is originally obtained from a combination of two terms. The first one is the Greek term chloros/khloros which means green. The second one, ella is a Latin term which means small. Chlorella cells are round and have a diameter ranging from 2 to 10 micrometers. These cells don’t possess any flagella. The cells also contain chloroplasts, the green pigment present in many plants that are responsible for photosynthesis. For this reason, chlorella solely requires water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide to photosynthesise. Chlorella reproduces asexually. The mother cells split into two. The new cells can sometimes cluster together forming a colony. Their cells multiply quickly within a short period. Chlorella is cultured in large open pools. Chlorella has a tough cell wall which makes it very hard to digest. For that reason, a process referred to as cell wall pulverisation was developed to break down the cell walls. Chlorella slurry from the pools is dried by spraying hot air on it. This forms chlorella powder which has an intense green colour. Chlorella powder has a characteristic bitter herby taste reminiscent of a more concentrated cup of green tea.

Chlorella is one of the oldest living organisms on earth. It has existed for more than 3 billion years. However, due to its very small size, it wasn’t discovered or even noticed until the 19th century. During this period, scientists were able to invent the microscope which could be used to view extremely tiny organisms that the naked eye couldn’t see. A renowned Dutch microbiologist by the name of Dr. Beijerinck was able to uncover this tiny organism after thoroughly observing it under the microscope. He even gave it the name that it goes by Chlorella. In the early 1900s, Japan became the first country to successfully cultivate pure cultures of chlorella to be used as an alternative source of nourishment. At the onset of World War I, other countries like Germany and the United States followed suit.

During the mid-1900s’ Chlorella became a very important source of food when the world was grappling with a hunger crisis. The rate at which the population was increasing at the time greatly overshadowed the amount of food that was being produced naturally. World War II also greatly contributed to the incapacity of many countries to produce food that could sustain their ever-growing population. As disaster was imminent, nations had to look for a solution quickly. Several institutions were tasked with researching alternative sources of food as land for planting crops was also becoming very scarce. Many countries resorted to chlorella as its production was relatively cheap and it was highly nutritious. These countries produced chlorella on a large scale to supplement their diets. Presently, chlorella has found wide-scale application in sewage effluent purification and production of cultures through mass cultivation.
