Ashwagandha extract (Withania sominfera) is one of the oldest and most popular herbs in Indian Ayurveda. It is also referred to as ‘Indian Winter Cherry’ or ‘Indian Ginseng’ in commercial realms. The term ‘Ashwagandha’ is derived from two Sanskrit terms, ‘ashva’ and ‘gandha’. The words refer to the smell of a horse since the ashwagandha roots have a strong odor and give strength which resembles that of a horse. The extract from plant is one of the most common in Ayurvedic healing. In the traditional setting, it was used take care of cases of infertility among couples struggling to sire children and maintain a healthy sexual life. It has vast health benefits to the human body and it falls under the group of plants referred to as Rasayana. These plants have the overall effect of increasing lifespan and longevity. The roots has also been used for several millennia with one of its most popular use being as a stress reliever/ adaptogen. The flowering shrub is short in stature and can only grow to a height of 30 inches. The green flowers are quite unique as they are shaped like a bell. The perennial plant grows best in relatively dry climate and soils, precisely stony soils. It therefore grows best in parts of India, the middle East, Northern and Eastern Africa. Cultivation of the plant is also quite common in Nepal, China and Yemen. The evergreen plant appears slightly hairy/snowy which is an environmental adaptation. The multifunctional roots are fairly long and tuberous in nature. The orange fruits are quite smooth with numerous seeds on the inside. They have some sort of covering which is taken off to reach the fruit. The fruits/berries are also used to come up with Ashwagandha extract.
Ashwagandha extract is obtained from ashwagandha roots. The bioactive compounds present in the roots include withanolide glycosides, saponins, steroidal lactones, withaferins, alkaloids and acylsteryl glycosides, triterpene lactones and typols. Withanolides are the most profound phytochemicals in ashwagandha extract. They are associated with most of the benefits of the extract. The withanolides, which are the basic elements in the extract, have relatively structure to ginsenosides, the main phytochemicals in Panax Ginseng. This is the reason why the two herbal extract share the common term “Indian Ginseng”. Even though the roots contain the highest amount of the bioactive phytochemicals, the fruits, seeds and the stem also have a considerable amount. Some of these include sitoindosides, withanolides, witherin and withanone. The extract also contains a considerable amount of iron.
