About Ginseng

The ginseng plant (Panax ginseng), is a perennial plant that is native to East Asia and which is mostly used for its potent roots. The ginseng plant falls under the family Araliaceae. Some of the terms used to refer to the ginseng plant include Korean ginseng, Oriental ginseng, Chinese ginseng, Ginseng coreano and Asian ginseng. The plant is also referred to as Renshen, Insam, and Ninjin in China, Korea, and Japan respectively. The term ‘ginseng’ is derived from the Romanisation of Chinese words Jen sheng or ren sheng meaning “human-like”. This is because the root of this plant looks like a human body. On the other hand, the term ‘Panax’ is a combination of two Greek words “Pan” and “Akos”, with the former translating to “all” and the latter translating to “healing”. The Russian scientist Carl Anton von Meyer was the one responsible for naming this species in the genus “panax” based on the properties it displayed.

This ginseng plant grows vertically to a maximum height of approximately 80cm. Its stem is round and fairly firm. Once the plant matures a few branches emanate from the single central stem. The leaves are palmately placed at the end of the branches. The leaves are green, ovate, and can grow approximately 19cm long. The edges of the leaves are serrated. At the pinnacle of the stem, are a bunch of tiny greenish-white flowers that give rise to several small berries that are red in colour. Each berry contains two seeds. Their roots are light brown or pale yellow and very fleshy. The roots grow at a very slow pace. This plant takes 5 to 7 years to mature fully. This is the best time to harvest the roots. Harvesting them earlier compromises the quality of the bioactive constituents. Upon harvesting, Ginseng is air-dried and ground to obtain white ginseng powder. It can also be steam-dried and ground to obtain red ginseng powder. Ginseng powder has a bitter-sweet taste. These powders are usually put into ginseng capsules.

Ginseng has a long history of use in Ancient China dating back to 100 C.E. Several ancient Chinese texts document its use as a nourishing product; it was used as an additive in numerous cuisines and beverages e.g. smoothies and soups. The first piece of literature to comprehensively annotate the use of ginseng was the Classic Herbal of Shennong, one of the oldest books in Chinese history. The latter was written by Shennong, a saintly farmer in Chinese mythology. It is claimed that Shennong consumed several herbs every day to determine which ones were suitable for human use. He eventually concluded that approximately 360 of them, were not only edible but also very beneficial to the human body. Ginseng was one of the herbs mentioned. In his words, the renowned herbalist believed that ginseng could aid in replenishing the spirit and calm the soul, especially during tumultuous moments. Also, most people kept a potted ginseng plant in their households as they believed that it would wade away evil spirits that could be hovering around and hence bring about bad luck. To date, the ginseng plant is cultivated in huge proportions in Korea, China, and Russia.
