About Bacopa Monnieri

Bacopa monnnieri is a creeping non-woody plant that grows in marshy lands, in highly water-logged soils. This plant is native to tropical Asia, specifically in India. It is also native to other tropic and sub-tropic regions e.g. Africa, America, Australia, and the Arabian Peninsula, among others. It is commonly referred to as water hyssop, baby tears or dwarf bacopa, Brahmi, Indian pennywort, herb of grace, and thyme-leaved Gratiola. Some other places where bacopa can be found widely currently are China, Vietnam, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Japan, and Singapore. Recently, it has also been introduced in Europe i.e. Spain and Portugal. The bacopa plant has tiny green succulent leaves that are ovate and stem from the many branches that the plant has. The leaves are oppositely placed on the stem. The flowers are pale blue and have approximately five petals. This plant usually spreads out as it grows that is why it is called a creeping plant. A mature plant can attain a height of not more than 1 foot and a width of between 1- 4 feet.

Bacopa monnieri thrives at altitudes ranging from sea level to 1300 m above sea level. The plant thrives in aquatic and terrestrial habitats along wetlands, coastal regions, rice pads, irrigated lands, mangroves, and ditches. In other tropical areas, it grows in ponds, aquariums, and shallow waters. Some people plant it in garden pots in their homes. Soils with poor drainage such as the ones in waterlogged areas form a good habitat for the growth of this plant. For that reason, clay, cinder, organic, coral, and sand can all support its growth. The more the amount of water available, the better the conditions for the cultivation of bacopa monnieri. The plant is adapted for these conditions. This plant also requires sufficient sunlight and is often grown in open spaces. Sufficient exposure to sunlight produces thicker and lusher yields. Hot and humid months are mostly utilised to cultivate this plant because this is when the conditions are optimum. Bacopa monnieri is ready for harvest when it covers the ground completely. The whole plant is harvested and washed with clean water to remove any soil remains. It is then dried under a shade for 8-10 days. The dried plant is finely ground to form bacopa monnieri powder. it often then goes through a extraction process to produce a extract with higher bioactive compounds

The use of bacopa monnieri can be dated to about 3000 years ago in India. It was culturally used to relieve patients of anxiety and help improve clarity in the mind. This is where it got its famous name “Brahmi” which translates to “knowing everything supreme”. Brahmi is derived from the
Lord Brahma, the divine god of the Hindu pantheon. Ancient text that was written by the respected sage Sushruta claim that this herb invigorated the brain hence the belief that it would increase one’s lifespan. He recommended that the herb be used to make juice which would be taken at particular times during the day. This would result in the Goddess of learning manifesting in the mind of the user and improving their knowledge. Ancient readers took the plant extract just before they embarked on reading and translating the voluminous religious texts and scriptures. They believed their concentration and intellect would be boosted.
