Agaricus Blazei Mushroom Powder

Agaricus blazei Murrill in edible mushroom that is native to Brazil, South America. Some of the terms used to refer to agaricus blazei mushrooms in different parts of the world include mushroom of God, mushroom of life, sun mushroom, Brazil mushroom, royal agaricus and ABM mushroom, from the initials. The mushrooms are referred to as himematsutake and cogumelo do sol, cogumelo da vida, cogumelo de deus in Japan and Brazil respectively. The terms used in Brazil are Portuguese terms that signify longevity and sustainable health. Agaricus blazei mushroom powder has a profound earthy flavour. The colour of the powder tends towards white. ABM mushrooms have a thick stalk with a cap that resembles a hemisphere on top. They range from white to orange in colour. The mushrooms mostly grow on grass surfaces where there is animal excrement. Minimal light is needed for the fruiting bodies to form. The optimum pH value for the growth of the mushrooms is 8. However, they can do relatively well within a pH of between 6-11. To increase the mushroom yield and biological efficiency, different combinations of substrates are used in their cultivation. Some of these substrates include horse manure, bird manure, and agro-residues such as sawdust, cottonseed shell, rice straw, wheat straw, corn straw, etc. Agaricus blazei mushroom powder is obtained after the mushrooms are harvested and thoroughly but carefully cleaned. Injuring the mushrooms causes them to darken hence producing powder of dark colour.

The mushrooms which are native to Brazil and Peu were later exported to Japan for research purposes. They later gained popularity in China, Taiwan, and Korea after they were exported there as well. The natives mixed the mushroom powder with warm water and then took it alongside different dishes and beverages. The mushrooms were discovered growing naturally in a small suburb referred to as Piedade in Sao Paolo, Brazil. The mushrooms which prefer temperate climates to thrive were found in plenty on elevated grounds in the Atlantic forest. Takatoshi Furumoto, a renowned botanist and scientist played a key role in popularizing agaricus blazei mushrooms. He is the one who recommended that the mushrooms be exported to Japan for further research after he discovered their existence in the 1960s. Belgian researcher Heinemann also had his input as he proposed for the mushrooms to be named ABM. The two researchers hailed from Pen State University. During their visit to Piedade city, they discovered that individuals here were relatively old compared to other regions. Upon interacting with them, they discovered that the locals ABM mushrooms quite a lot. They took the initiative to research further on it.

At one point in time, the demand for ABM mushrooms increased to the point that certain parties sabotaged the market by trying to change the names and own the mushroom species. This affected the identification and categorization process of different strains of the species. However, this was resolved and the cultivation of the mushrooms especially in Brazil carried on as usual. The mushrooms were held in high regard as they were relatively expensive to grow in the beginning. They were grown in Brazil and then exported to Japan where they were processed for sale in other countries. However, this has changed over time and the locals in Brazil, and other parts of the world, can cultivate them and also use them locally. To date, the ABM mushroom is a key component in the Brazilian culinary and herbal culture.
