About Folic Acid Tablets

Folic acid is classified as water-soluble vitamin B9. The compound is a more stable form of folate. The compound is highly soluble in hot water. It is also partially soluble in cold water and such solvents as ethanol. In its natural form, folic acid appears in crystal form, with the crystals bearing a needle shape. Its color ranges from orange to yellow. Also, the color changes to a darker shade or chars if the folic acid is exposed to high temperatures of about 250°C. It is preferably stored between 15-30°C. In the human body, folic acid is found and also required in high concentration in the kidney and liver. Green leafy vegetables act as some of the best sources of folic acid. The compound is also contained in high amounts in cow, goat and sheep milk.

Supplementing folic acid is essential to the body since the body does not have the ability to store the body for long. This creates the need to supply the vitamin from various food sources. Some of the food sources with relative proportions of folic acid include peas, sprouts, broccoli, potatoes, liver, kidney, and spinach, among others. Folic acid can also be extracted from these different sources and ingested directly, in different forms: solution, tablets, powder and capsule. The only difference between folic acid and folate is an additional glutamate which exists in the acid. Folic acid tablets supports normal maternal tissue growth during pregnancy. This is because it supplements the essential elements to developing embryos. It acts as a key component in synthesis of new cells, precisely nucleic acid (DNA and RNA). This help in avoiding complications and birth defects, precisely neural tube defects. Neural defects include damage to a baby’s spine and brain.

The earliest history of use of folic acid is traced back to the 20th century. In the 1930s, a renowned pathologist and researcher known as Lucy Wills introduced to the greater world to folic acid as a form of supplementation. She highlighted the key role played by the compound in the human body. In most cases, she prescribed folic acid tablets to her pregnant patients, especially those who portrayed anemic symptoms. The pathologist, who worked in Royal Free hospital in London, mostly worked with patients who hailed from Bombay, India. Most of them were female textile workers whose bodies behaved a certain way during their respective pregnancy periods on account of their work. More information on folic acid was explored and put in public domain in the years that followed. The first time folic acid was extracted from spinach was in 1941. The term folic acid is derived from folium which also means leaf. Other individuals who played major roles in ensuring this include Bob Stokstad, Mitchell, Angier and others. The compound was recommended to pregnant women before and during their pregnancies; taking the supplement a couple of months before the pregnancy was ideal, according to most health specialists. Women who had just given birth and were in the breastfeeding phase were also advised to use folic acid tablets.
