About Psyllium Husk

The psyllium husk plant (Plantago ovate) is indigenous to India, West Asia, Southeast Asia, Mexico, and Pakistan. The family from which the psyllium husk plant originates is commonly referred to as plantain and has over 200 species of herbs. The plant species in context produces seeds and husks that have always been very valuable since ancient times. Psyllium originates from the Greek word ‘psulla’ meaning flea. This is because the psyllium plant produces many tiny seeds that look like a bunch of fleas. This plant is also referred to as ‘ispaghula’ or ‘isabgol’. Isagbol is a Persian word made by joining two terms ‘isap’ and ‘ghol’ to mean that which looks like a horse’s ear. This describes the shape of the seeds. The seeds are rich in fibre, and absorb and retain water whenever they two come into contact.

The psyllium husk plant grows to a height of approximately 30-45cm once the plant is mature. It has short stems and thin, grass-like leaves that are long. This plant has a profound and extensive taproot system which makes the plat quite firm as it is growing. It also has numerous tiny flowers which are firmly supported on the plant’s base. Flowers start to develop 60 days after planting has taken place. Every plant has the capability of producing more than 14,000 seeds on a good season. The psyllium husk plant begins to release the psyllium husk seeds once they become fully developed. It can do well in either sand or silt. They can also grow properly in sandy loam soils with good drainage. A pH that is slightly above 7 is ideal for the growth of the plant. Enhanced soil conditions e.g. addition of organic manure, lead to greater seed yields. To achieve the desired amount of moisture content in the soil, the land has to be well watered before any seed can be planted. The seeds are tucked approximately 60mm deep in loose soil; excessively firm soil would hinder germination. Weeding is carried out regularly especially when the parent plant is still young. During harvesting, sections of the plant which have been harvested are dried and thrashed to obtain the seeds and husks separately. Upon sufficient drying under natural sunlight, the seeds are then ground and processed to either capsules, tablets, powder or tinctures.

Exploration of the significance of psyllium husks started began more than 2000 years ago in the Indian subcontinent, specifically in India. The indigenous used it to prepare their dishes as it helped them get a healthier gut. Around 1920, Dr John Harvey Kellogg noticed a product under the name “Psylla” with good amounts of soluble fibre and which has the ability to retain a considerable amount of water. Through his research, psyllium ended up being an active ingredient in most cereals. This applies to date. It is partly the reason why most people feel full whenever they eat cereals for breakfast.
