About Aloe Vera

The aloe vera plant (Aloe barbadensis miller) is a succulent evergreen plant that thrives in hot and humid climatic conditions found in tropical and subtropical regions. It also grows well in deserts and alpine regions - America, Africa, Europe, and Asia. Aloe vera is widely believed to have originated in the Arabian Peninsula before spreading to other parts of the world. The word aloe vera is composed of two terms ‘allloeh’ an Arabic term that means a bitter shiny substance and “vera” a Latin term which means true. Aloe vera is known by different names in different regions. In India, it is referred to as ‘the fountain of youth’ or ‘doctor of the sky’. Here it is revered and held in high regard as a sacred plant. In the Arabian Peninsula, it is known as “the flower of the desert” because of its ability to thrive in harsh desert conditions. To this date, many people still confuse it with the cactus plant that is why it is mistakenly known to some as ‘the desert cacti’.
The aloe vera plant has green succulent serrated leaves. It has a thick and very short stem. Its flowers are spiky and bright yellow in colour. Its roots are shallow and fibrous for easy absorption of water when it rains infrequently and for storage of nutrients that are utilised by the plant. The leaves are made up of three layers. The inner layer is composed of a clear gel. The middle layer is composed of a bright yellow sap. The thick, green, and glossy exterior that you normally see. The leaves are normally sliced open and squeezed to obtain the gel. The gel is the most important part of the plant harvested for use. It is clear and has no smell or taste. Aloe vera leaves are usually freeze-dried, ground into a powder, and often used to make aloe vera capsules.

Aloe vera is the most widely mentioned plant in ancient texts from various parts of the world. It has been used for over 5000 years. Aloe vera usage was first recorded among the ancient Egyptian civilizations. Several drawings of this plant can be found on the walls of temples. Egyptians held aloe vera in high esteem and referred to it as ‘the plant of immortality’. It is believed that Queen Cleopatra used it daily to enhance her beauty. Some texts claim in 333 B.C. Alexander the Great was advised by Aristotle to conquer the island of Socotra because it had vast amounts of the aloe vera plant which they could use to treat soldiers who had been injured during a battle. In 4th century B.C., routes for trading Aloe Vera were mapped in the Red Sea and the Mediterranean region. The Arab traders then traveled with Aloe to India and Persia. The Arabs used their feet to crush the leaves and put the pulp obtained into goatskin bags to dry in the sun. This formed powder which could stay for longer. Ancient Sumerian texts state how the extract from the aloe vera plant was also used by King Akkad of Ancient Mesopotamia alongside his subjects once they had taken their meals.
