About Bacopa Monnieri

Bacopa Monnieri (BM) is a vital herbal plant that has been in use for a long time in Ayurvedic medicine. It was classified as a “rayasana”. This is a collective term used to refer to herbal plants which impacted positively on the mind, intellect and overall brain health. The plant is commonly referred to as water hyssop or Brahmi. The plant was named Brahmi after the Hindu creator-god who is referred to as Brahma. The succulent creeping plant, which has small oblong leaves, normally thrives best in swampy wetlands with a bit of tropical or sub-tropical climate. It also grows quite well in swamps and wetlands. The flowers of the bacopa plant range from white to a light shade of purple. The plant mostly grows in India, East Asia, the United States, Sri Lanka and Australia. The plant also commonly occurs naturally as a weed in most rice fields. All the plant parts are quite useful and were used for different purposes in traditional Ayurveda. The whole plant can be dried and later on ground into powder. Alternatively, the parts of the plant above ground can be used in their fresh form.

The perennial plant stands out among most psycho-stimulants as it is not addictive and compelling in how it works in the body. Rather than taking away from the neuron's, bacopa adds value to them. The primary active compounds contained in BM are saponins, flavonoids, bacopasaponins and alkaloids. The most profound steroidal saponins contained in Bacopa Monnieri are referred to as bacosides. They are majorly responsible for the antioxidant and memory-boosting properties exhibited by the plant. The central nervous system (CNS) is quite sensitive as it is the body motor system. History texts have pointed out the use of the plant thousands of years ago. It was used to boost the intellectual capacities of Vedic scholars who had to spend lots of time mastering bulky content in form of sacred hymns and scriptures. Also, the Hindus used the plant in various ceremonies especially in dedication and sanctification of their new-born toddlers. The belief was that the plant would be their hallway to knowledge and intellectual brilliance.

In traditional Indian medicine, the leaves of the bacopa plant were used to improve diminishing body strength. Also, they made a poultice out of boiling the aerial plant of the plant and the roots; they used it to strengthen the breathing system and suppress coughs and any other infections. Fresh juice and paste obtained from the leaves were used to reduce inflammation on the joints. The paste was also applied on the bellies of women who had just given birth in order to reduce the sharp postnatal pains. Presently, bacopa is majorly preferred for its nootropic properties as it has the ability to enhance the brain. It has been proven to improve memory, learning capabilities and keenness. Bacopa Monnieri capsules can be consumed quite comfortably by different sets of people. This ranges from college students trying to grasp newly acquired information to a regular human being going through the daily hustles and bustles of life where they have to take in and keep up with so much information. The capsules are also used often by the elderly folks whose memory abilities are reducing.
