About Shilajit

Shilajit is a naturally-occurring matter which was first discovered and used in India. The mineral substance is found in mountainous areas where it was first cited by communities that live there. Some of the terms used to refer to shilajit include 'rasayana' and 'rasayanam'. The two terms are quite common in Siddha and Ayurveda writings. They mean that which has the power to rejuvenate to previous superior forms and boost the overall quality of life. Other terms used to refer to the product include shilajatu, mountain pitch, salajit, mimie and mummiyo, among others. The product is sticky in nature as it possesses elastic properties. This is attributed to the tarry nature on the surface. Shilajit is a brown to black colour. The solid substance harbours no definite shape. Upon drying and grinding it, its extract, which is in powder form has a bitter taste. Also, it harbours a strong pungent smell that can be likened to stagnant cow urine. Shilajit occurs in the form of shapeless bits of semi-solid to solid matter with an even surface.
Shilajit is mainly sourced in the elevated highlands in Central Asia, specifically the Himalaya, Altai, and Pamir. The Himalayas are located on the border of India and Nepal. The organic matter also exists on hilly rocks and caves located in Tibet, Afghanistan, and Chile, among other regions. Shilajit normally forms at altitudes between 1000-5000m above sea level. The resinous substance is formed as a result of centuries of continuous decomposition of plant material upon being acted upon by microorganisms. The decomposition of specific plants and trees makes up a greater proportion of shilajit. Some of these plants include Sullu or Royle’s spurge, hornwort, white clover, and different kinds of molds and mosses.

A number of conditions have to be met for the gradual decomposition to take place i.e. the right amount of sunlight, rainfall, and temperature. The decomposition thrives in a balance of summer and winter temperatures. In obtaining shilajit capsules and tablets, the solid matter has to be dried and crushed into powder, after which is processed into different usable forms.
Shilajit has a history of use that spans over 3,000 years. Egyptians used the natural product to embalm the corpses of the dead. Here, shilajit acted as a preservative hence preventing further rotting of the bodies. The embalming process was especially performed on kings and queens, among other prominent individuals in the society. In the former Soviet Union, Shilajit was used as an item of trade. It held high economic value and was only exchanged for relatively valuable goods. It was used by farmers, to boost the growth of plants, especially during specific seasons. It was sprinkled on farmlands in powder form. Also, some people believed that the strong emollient odour has restorative properties hence used to it for meditations. It was and is still quite popular among yogis. Also, it was documented in ancient British texts that a number of archaeologists came across the material and hence traced its use to the Indus Valley civilisation in Pakistan and northwest India. The latter happened around 2600 B.C.
