About Triphala

Triphala is a mixture that comprises of three fruits: amalaki (Embelica officinalis), bibhitaki (Terminalia belerica), and haritaki (Terminalia chebula). The fruits are mixed in equal proportions to come up with the powder. Each fruit has its unique properties and features. Triphala is a combination of two words, tri, and phala. The former means three while the latter means fruits. The powder has a profound bitter taste. Most people take it alongside a teaspoon of honey. The respective trees that produce these fruits thrive in tropical and sub-tropical climatic conditions, hence their vast availability in the Middle East i.e. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India. In preparation for triphala powder, the fruits are first plucked from the trees after which they are dried for ample time. They are then ground into a powder and mixed up proportionately to constitute triphala powder. A pulveriser plays a key role in crushing the dried fruits into powder. The finer triphala powder is, the higher its efficacy will be once it is ingested. Triphala has a long shelf life as it can remain viable for years.

The amalaki fruit also referred to as amla or Indian gooseberry, is popular especially for its calming effects. It contains relatively huge proportions of Vitamin C. The fruit is also referred to as the ‘nurse herb’ due to its varied uses in providing different remedies for the body. Haritaki is a bitter fruit that has only 1 seed. It is also referred to as black myrobalans or harada. The bibhitaki fruit has a bitter taste on account of the numerous acids contained in it: gallic acid, chebulagic acid, and linoleic acid. The term haritaki means ‘king of medicine. It is also rich in proteins and essential oils. In most instances, the fruit is harvested from the wild. The term bibhitaki means ‘fearless of diseases’ due to the profound restorative features of the fruit.

Triphala has been in use for well over 2,000 years, especially in ancient India. In the Indian culture, there is a popular adage that goes, “No mother? Do not worry so long as you have Triphala”. The natives came up with the saying to denote the impact that triphala has in their lives. They believed that, just like a mother, it served as the remedy and refuge in most of life’s tumultuous moments. This reference was specially made regarding calming the different systems and organs within the body. Some of the ancient texts that first wrote about the existence and use of triphala include the Charaka and Sushrut Samhita, which goes as far as 1500 BC. Traditionally, natives in India mixed triphala powder in their bathing water where they made sure to clean their eyes with it. They also used the powder to come up with local mouthwashes that they used for dental hygiene. It was also ingested after meals to serve as a remedy for digestive issues. The seeds of the fruits were also used to provide fuel, on account of their high oil content.

The taste

I've had previously triphala powder from other company and it tasted different than this one. Your product is a wee bit sour. I don't know if it's have to be like that or no. I just noticed it.
