Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is a herbal, herbaceous plant that belongs to the leguminous family. It is in the same family as soy and pea plants. Fenugreek is quite similar to clover in terms of outlook. Foenum-graecum refers to “Greek hay” and this term applies due to the dominant scent of the plant, which resembles that of hay grown widely in the Mediterranean region. Also, the plant was grown as fodder in the Mediterranean region and this is how most people came to learn of it. The fenugreek plant is quite short and grows to a height of about 90 cm. It is loosely branched and has pods which contain seeds that range from green to yellow to brown in colour. The flowers of the plant range from pale yellow to white in colour. The plant mostly grows in dry lands where there is minimal moisture and water content. For this reason, the plant prefers dry soils as it does not do well in wet soils. The fenugreek plant does well in dry grasslands, uncultivated lands, and on hill sides and slopes in highlands.
The different plant of the plant that are put to use include twigs, roots, leaves and seeds. The seeds can either be dried or used in their fresh form. The seeds have a sweet and pleasant aroma and taste, bit with some slight bitterness from afar. The seeds are contained in pods and they range from 10-20 in number. They contain a variety of bioactive compounds. Some of these include flavonoids, saponins, choline, trigonelline and saponins, alongside other alkaloids. The seeds also contain phosphates, irons and vitamins A, B and C, fiber and protein alongside other constituents. The leaves of the fenugreek plant are edible and therefore they were used, and are still used to come up with various types of delicacies. On the other hand, the seeds are used to come up with different spices. During the growth phase, the optimum weather for ripening and harvesting of the seeds is warm and tropical weather. The growth of the plant, the seeds included, is quite sluggish during the cold seasons.
The annual plant is native to the Mediterranean region, Southern Europe. In recent years, it has also increased popularity and is cultivated in Northern Africa, Southeastern Europe, India and Western Asia. The plant was revered and held in high regard by Romans in ancient Greece and Egypt. The earliest physicians had discovered that the seeds contained mucilage; a combination of the latter and water provided a myriad of health benefits. Egyptians used the plant during childbirth and during menstruation, to get rid of excessive pain and discomfort. Also, they used the seeds and green leaves to come up with various meals. The fiber contained in the latter helped make the food have a more desirable texture.
