About Amla

The amla fruit is a tiny yellowish-green fruit produced by a deciduous tree that originates from India. Amla fruits are dried at extremely low temperatures before being ground into powder to be then processed into either capsule, tablet, or stay as powder form. The amla is normally referred to as Amalaki or Indian Gooseberry, in different parts of the world. Other popular names used to refer to the fruit include Amali, Anola, Bhumi amla, Ambika, Amalaki, Amalakamu, and Malacca tree, among many others. The amla tree is regarded as a sacred tree by the Hindus. The amla tree is scientifically known as Phyllanthus emblica. In other circles, it is also known as Emblica officinalis. Phyllanthus Emblica is ancient to the Southeastern regions of Asia, particularly Central India, Pakistan, Malaya, Mascarene Islands, Southern China, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. In the northern parts of India, amla is cultivated for commercial purposes. Most Asian natives consume raw amla fruits while others just preserve them for their religious significance.

The amla tree usually grows to a maximum height of about 18 meters. However, a few of them may grow to heights exceeding 25m. It has a smooth brownish bark that periodically peels off like the bark of a guava tree. This tree is normally referred to as an evergreen tree because it is very rare to find it bare even though it sheds off its leaves and branches periodically. The leaves of the amla tree are ovated and grow 1-2cm in length, and 3mm wide. These small leaves are alternately placed on either side of a slender branchlet. Amla has a bunch of tiny yellow flowers that are positioned on the leaves’ axils. They have small round fruits which are smooth and light green in colour. The fruits have 6-8 faint lines which run vertically across their surface from the apex to the base of the fruit. This makes the fruit look like it is sectioned. A few fruits attain a brownish-red colour once they mature. The matured fruits are hardened and fleshy with six small seeds that are perfectly centered. The fruits weigh almost 70 grams and split open when left in direct sunlight for a long time. The fruit has a bitter tangy taste. Also, its pulp is highly rich in fibers. Amla thrives in tropical and subtropical regions. It is usually cultivated at altitudes greater than 2000m above sea level. Plenty of sunlight located in these regions is essential to the growth of amla plants. They can tolerate temperatures of up to 46°C during the summer but much lower during the flowering season to avoid the destruction of the developing fruits. Amla grows comfortably in both heavy and light soils. The amla trees start to fruit 7 years after planting season.

Amla has been used as a constituent in numerous traditional cuisines and beverages for over 5000 years. It was used as the main ingredient in the Rasayana “Chyawanprash” which the indigenous believed contributed to mental clarity and overall wellness. It is also believed that the Buddhist Sangha was given Amalaka as a gift by Emperor Asoka after he visited him. It is also said that some elements of the Indian temple's architecture were derived from the Amla tree. Ancient Indians also believed that giving Amla berries as an offering to God on Wednesdays would solve their financial issues. To date, natives in the Indian subcontinent still use the amla tree and fruits as an element of worship. A majority of Indians plant the amla tree in their home gardens for different purposes. Both Kartik Mahatma and Vrat Kaumadi issued a directive that this tree should be worshipped.
